WASHINGTON, June 26 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been given the honour to officiate the 2011 BIO International Convention exhibition, the world's largest biotechnology gathering to be held here next week.

Malaysian Ambassador to the US Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis said it was a recognition for Malaysia since Muhyiddin was given the honour to officiate the exhibition, together with other dignitaries.

"It is a great honour because we are participating in the convention for the first time. So, when Malaysia were invited to officiate the opening, it was an endorsement and honour to Malaysia, underlining the country's commitment to biotechnology," he said.

Over 1,700 companies from around the globe will participate in the exhibition while Bio-Xcell, a premier biotechnology ecosystem in Iskandar Malaysia which is being developed on a 60:40 joint-venture between Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) and UEM Land Bhd, will be the only Malaysian participant in the exhibition.

BiotechCorp, which is in charge of facilitating the country's biotechnology industry, has been an avid participant at the annual biotechnology gathering and this year marks the seventh time BiotechCorp is participating in the BIO International Convention.

BiotechCorp first participated in Philadelphia in 2005, followed by Chicago in 2006, Boston (2007), San Diego (2008), Atlanta (2009) and Chicago (2010).

The BIO International Convention attracts the biggest names in biotech, offers key networking and partnership opportunities, and provides insights and inspiration on the major trends affecting the industry.

While in Washington, Muhyiddin will also engage in several biotechnology-related endeavours.

According to Wisma Putra statement, Muhyiddin is scheduled to witness several signings in biotechnology-related industries and meet several renowned biotechnology personalities during his trip here.

Muhyiddin is also scheduled to attend a curtain raiser event for BioMalaysia 2011 and the 2011 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy.

The 2011 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy which will be held in November this year at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in conjunction with BioMalaysia 2011, is designed to facilitate networking and business partnerships between companies from the US, Malaysia, India, China, Japan and other Asian countries.

Other programmes that have been lined up during his visit include a roundtable luncheon hosted by the US-ASEAN Business Council and a visit to the University of Maryland, College Park.

Muhyiddin is also scheduled to meet several US senior officials over breakfast on Monday.

Malaysia and the United States have been enjoying warm and friendly relations and in terms of trade relations, the US was Malaysia's fourth largest trading partner in 2010.

Total trade between the two countries in 2010 amounted to RM117.32 billion compared with RM109.21 billion in 2009.
